How mosquito spraying works

The office does not keep a regular spraying schedule or spraying list. Spraying is done only when it is truly needed and when conditions are right. The goal is to bring mosquito numbers down to tolerable levels or to help prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease.

The County sprays for adult mosquitoes (called adulticide applications) when the number of biting adult mosquitoes goes above public health or nuisance levels.

Spraying is done from trucks with ultra-low-volume (ULV) cold aerosol equipment, late in the evening or early in the morning, weather permitting.

Mercer County uses products (adulticides) recommended for use in New Jersey by the Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-borne Diseases and Rutgers University. See the full list of products used, with labels, safety data sheets (SDSs) and fact sheets.

Specific street addresses are not published. Spraying is done area-wide and targets places where adult mosquitoes may gather at the time of spraying.

Aerial mosquito larviciding

Mercer County Mosquito Control also treats mosquito breeding areas from a helicopter. Many breeding areas are large or hard to reach, so they are treated routinely when mosquito larvae are in the standing water.

You may see the helicopter flying low near homes as it lines up to reach nearby treatment sites.

Please note: Aerial larviciding is not an area-wide adult mosquito control (“mosquito spraying”) operation.

Aerial larviciding uses granules made with Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis). The granules are target-specific and biorational. They are dropped directly over standing water to stop mosquito larvae from growing into biting adult mosquitoes.
